Bangladesh’s Insurance Protection Gap

Most people wait until it’s too late

With limited insurance coverage across Bangladesh, acting early is the smartest way to protect your health, income, and future

Insurance in Bangladesh

Despite strong demand for financial protection, Bangladesh continues to exhibit low insurance penetration, highlighting a substantial untapped market driven by unmet needs in life, health, and income protection coverage.  - MetLife. (2025). Employee Benefit Trends Study (EBTS) , Bangladesh Edition

Start Early, Pay Less

The younger you are when you take out life insurance, the lower your premiums will be for the rest of your life. A 25 year old pays a fraction of what a 40 year old would for the same coverage.

- Lock in low premiums while you are young and healthy

- Build a savings component that grows over time

- Protect your parents who may depend on you

- Get critical illness cover before any health issue arise

Protect Your Partnership

Marriage brings shared dreams and shared responsibilities. Both partners should be covered so that if anything happens, your spouse isn't left with financial burdens during an already difficult time.

- Joint coverage plans for both spouses

- Income replacement if one earner is lost

- Mortgage and debt protection

- Begin planning for your future family

Secure Your Children's Future

When you have children, insurance stops being about you rather it becomes about them. Ensure their education, their future, their dreams continue regardless of what happens to you today.

- Education protection plan for tution continuity

- Higher life cover to replace your full income

- Child-specific critical illness riders

- Savings plan that mature when children reach college age

Retire Without Worry

As you approach retirement, your insurance strategy shifts from protection to ensuring income continuity. Your children are grown, but your own financial security in your golden years must be secured.

- Retirement income annuity plans

- Senior health coverage and hospitalisation

- Estate planning with life cover

- Conversion of savings policies into income streams

Life Insurance is a contract where you pay regular premiums to an insurer. In return, those insurers pays a sum of money to your chosen beneficiaries when you pass away. It ensures your loved ones maintain their standard of living, pay off debts and meet future goals - even if you are no longer there to provide for them.

Premiums depend on your age, health and the level of coverage you choose. Basic life insurance can be very affordable for most working families. The younger and healthier you are when you start, the lower your premium and it stays at that rate for the life of your policy.

Life insurance pays a benefit to your family when you pass away. Health insurance covers your medical expenses - hospitalisation, treatment, surgery while you are alive. Critical illness insurance pays a lump sum upon diagnosis of a serious illness. Many people carry all three for complete protection.

Takaful is an Islamic Insurance model based on mutual assistance (ta'awun). Participants contribute to a shared fund (Tabarru') to help fellow members in times of need. There is no interest (riba) and no harmful uncertainity (gharar). It is structured to comply fully with Shariah guidelines and is widely available in Bangladesh.

An endowment plan combines savings with life insurance. You pay premiums over a set period and receive a lump sum at maturity whether or not you made a claim. If something happens to you during the term, your family receives the full sum assured. It is ideal for retirement, children's education or any major life goal.

All insurance companies in Bangladesh are licensed and regulated by the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA), established under the IDRA Act 2010. IDRA ensures companies maintain financial solvency, treat policyholders fairly and settle claims in a timely and transparent manner.
